The crooki mule deer hunt is carried out in the desert type habitat on Buena Vista Ranch. The desert habitat on the ranch consists mainly of mesquite, yuccas, and prickly pear cactus. This hunt is usually carried out by spot and stalk, horse back, or on a high rack truck. We harvest 3-5 mature trophy crooki mule deer per year which average from 140-150 inches. The season for the hunts ranges from late November to Mid January (December being peak rut).
Crooki Mule deer are hunted from 4,200 ft and up to 7,000 ft, at the lower altitudes on Rancho Buena Vista. Unlike other Mule deer species, the crooki mule deer stays out of mountainous ranges are found down in the valleys. Mature bucks are often found with big herds of doe's during the rut ( 4-8 doe's per buck) making them easier to spot. Average weight of a mature crooki mule deer buck averages around 200 lbs.
